The Castel Menardo, of which today we can only admire the wrecks, is a medieval fortress build up from Carl Magno in the border of its empire in Italy, on the ending of a a hill reachable only by foot, along an uncertain path. Its edification is around to the XII-XIV sec. and it was realized together with the Tower of Polegra, to defense of the Abbey, from Saracenos incursions. During the restoration a underground space has been uncovered of....still uncertain identity. The choice of the place was finalized to the defensive character of the fortification: only reachable by foot, cause of its uncomfortable paths very hard to reach on horses. Although its huge appearance of wreck, the powerful walling and the vestments in squared limestone our castle is very similar to the Cassinesi fortifications, and in particular to the Rocca Janula, that it introduces a perimeter to irregular course with squared prominences, correspondents to towers and turrets and one semicircular tower. Also the squared body of Castel Menardo proposes angular prominences much similar to the Cassinesi. Now in Castel Menardo we have only external wall so it is much difficult to realize the inner organization. Two were the portali of still visible access and many the archer along the walls, now hidden from thick vegetation, that make clear the defensive character. The body of rectangular make was builded on two levels, and till now the profiles of two placed vault- barrel are perfectly readable. On the walls in prosecution, which the height of the imposte is still visible; In Castel Menardo, in the zone that preceded the tower, and in alignment with the ammorsature, a sinking has carried to the light a squared space situated to a lower level regarding the plan of trample of the castle, demonstrating the existence of an other space of different heights, also covered from a barrel vault, of which they are visible to earth it brick. No document is emerged in order to make light on the period and the workers that raised this medioevale fortress, but a legend tells that Castel Menardo was constructed at Carlo Magno period along the line of border of its empire, like defensive bastion, after the victory on the longobardo army, in order to consecrate definitively its power in the conquered territories, and in order to defend the monastero of Saint Liberatore from the saraceno incursions. According to a second popular legend Castel Menardo and the castle of Polegra, both separated from the Alento river and both situated near to Saint Liberatore to Maiella, were builds up to one short distance therefore that thepaladins of Carl Magno, gigantic heroes in the imaginary collective, they could pass their working tools from one fortress to the other simplyi with the hands.
