THE POLEGRA TOWER

Torre di PolegraThe Tower of Polegra, of Longobardo origin, is reached up by a path that starts from Garifoli, contrada of Serramonacesca, from which is distant approximately 1 km. The fortilizio has a cylindrical shape, but today we can only admire the half, the part that remains. The tower, with the Castel Menardo it seems have been commissioned from CarlMagno to defense the abbey of Saint Liberatore. The castle was an important inhabited center at the dependencies of Saint Liberatore. It is presumed that Polegra has been lived nearly until the end of the 1400's, of the castle today remains only the half of one circular tower and little other. The legend says that the castle of Polegra was constructed from the frankishpaladins in order to assert their supremacy on the Longobardi, and all the abruzzesi possession were stealed , in order to defend the monastero of Saint Liberatore from the attacks of the Saraceni. In 1250 it was inhabited and the legend says that in it "was reorganized two monstrous girls, and a crippled young guy were healed with some consecrated bread sent by Peter from the Eremo of Santo Spirito. No document has never made light on the abandonment of the castle, but the more appropriated thesis wants that, later on during a feracious pestilenza that decimated the population, the monks of Saint Liberatore to Maiella advised the survivors to move in to Serramonacesca.
